Evaluating Afterschool Programs Under ESSA

Sandra Jo Wilson, Abt Global; Ruth Curran Neild, Research for Action; Wendy McClanahan, McClanahan Associates

Report

May 9, 2019

This report uses the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) evidence framework to help decision-makers identify effective afterschool programs. Abt and our colleagues found there is a substantial set of afterschool programs with evidence of effectiveness, including branded and unbranded programs. Taken together, they improved a variety of outcomes in areas ranging from mathematics and reading/English language arts achievement to physical activity/health to school attendance and graduation to social and emotional competencies.
