Expanding Our Impact
Infectious diseases like malaria, compounded by weak health systems and widespread poverty, pose a serious health threat in Sierra Leone. Since 2008, Abt has teamed with government stakeholders and local organizations on everything from vector control and malaria research to trade. Highlights of our work include:
- Through the U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, Abt controls the mosquitoes that spread malaria. We protect people’s homes through spray campaigns and insecticide-treated net distribution. We train administrators. And we established Sierra Leone’s first vector-borne disease insectary and laboratory.
- For the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Health Systems 20/20 project, Abt used an integrated approach to address financing, governance, and capacity constraints on priority health services.
- For the USAID West Africa Trade and Investment Hub, Abt trained government officials on trade agreement standards to facilitate intraregional and global commerce.
