Expanding Our Impact

The Kyrgyz Republic has faced both infectious disease epidemics and the continuous effects of climate change. Abt’s work in the Kyrgyz Republic supported government action, local non-governmental organizations, and community groups in their battles against infectious diseases. The nation has one of the highest tuberculosis rates in Central Asia, so Abt implemented the USAID-funded Defeat TB program (2014-2019) to build health system capacity and improve TB case finding and treatment. Abt continued to work on this critical issue through the USAID Eliminating Tuberculosis in Central Asia (ETICA) project. We have also addressed key climate change vulnerabilities in the country, providing landscape management, greenhouse gas emission data, and self-governance strategies. Through the USAID C5+1 Adaptation Project, Abt trained Kyrgyz decisionmakers on best practices for national and sector-level climate change adaptation planning and for developing a National Adaptation Plan. Through the USAID Local Health System Sustainability (LHSS) Project, Abt supported the country's COVID-19 response, coordinating closely with key government stakeholders and development partners to ensure the interventions supported a national emergency response, while contributing to overall health system strengthening and resilience.
