Expanding Our Impact
Uzbekistan’s health systems needed a complete transformation after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989. The primary care sector received only 25 percent of all health care resources while the majority of resources were sent to expensive hospital care and outpatient specialists. Abt led the USAID-funded ZdravReform, ZdravPlus, Zdravplus II (1994-2009) and Quality Health Care Project (QHCP, 2010-2015), which focused on restructuring and strengthening Uzbekistan’s health systems. Through the USAID Eliminating Tuberculosis in Central Asia (ETICA) project (2019-2024) and now the TB Free Uzbekistan activity, we are improving Uzbekistan’s regional and local capacity to detect and treat TB and drug-resistant TB. In addition, through USAID’s Local Health System Sustainability Project (LHSS), Abt contributed to Uzbekistan’s COVID-19 response by procuring testing supplies, assisting with supply chain management, and assessing hospital readiness to receive USAID-donated ventilators.
