Tracking Post COVID Conditions: Public Health Surveillance

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Prevalence of post-COVID conditions (PCC) is estimated at 10-35% or higher.
  • Abt supports passive and active surveillance systems to learn about PCC.
  • Abt provides data coordination, management, and statistical support.

PROJECT

Tracking the burden, distribution, and impact of Post COVID-19 conditions in diverse populations for children, adolescents, and adults (Track PCC)

The Challenge

Post-COVID Conditions (PCC), or Long COVID, are chronic symptoms or conditions that occur after SARS-CoV-2 infection and are present for at least three months. So far, estimates of burden from previous surveillance systems have varied depending on population and methodology. Learning more about the ongoing health effects from SARS-CoV-2 acute infection and post-infection periods is critical to understanding the PCC-related population health burden, knowing who is most vulnerable, and informing prevention and treatment efforts.

The Approach

Under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Abt provides data coordination, management, and statistical analysis support for active and passive surveillance systems. In partnership with the CDC and four partner sites in five geographic areas, Abt developed protocols, standard operating procedures, and data collection tools. Abt continues to lead data analysis, assist with manuscript development, and provide training and technical assistance.

The passive surveillance system uses data extracted from health information exchanges and electronic health records. Abt processes on a quarterly basis medical encounters for over three million individuals with a documented SARs-CoV-2 infection. The active surveillance system uses surveys administered four times during the 18 months following a participant’s SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. Abt leads analytical support to estimate incidence, prevalence, duration, and severity of PCC symptoms among adult, adolescent, and pediatric populations.

The Results

Abt co-authored a manuscript with CDC and site partners describing the Track PCC passive and active surveillance protocols. The data from this project will provide key information needed to identify which groups PCC impacts the most.
