Building Strong Communities
Nigeria – which has the largest economy and population in Africa – faces significant security and governance challenges. However, the country took a huge step forward in 2014 when federal lawmakers enacted the National Health Bill – supported by the Abt Global-led PATHS2 project – which provides a framework for the regulation, development and management of a national health system. Ongoing Abt-led projects in Nigeria also are working on reducing the prevalence of malaria, improving health system financing, expanding regional trade, and supporting low-emission development, among other work. As part of the USAID Local Health System Sustainability (LHSS) Project, Abt helps the Nigerian government and local stakeholders advance health systems strengthening and domestic resource mobilization priorities, while increasing coverage of essential health services for the most vulnerable populations, especially women and people with disabilities.
