PROJECT
What Works Clearinghouse Preschool-to-Postsecondary Evidence Synthesis Task Orders (WWC-PESTO) Assisting Students Struggling with Behavior in Grades K-12
The Challenge
Educators and policymakers face the challenge of identifying and implementing effective strategies to improve the social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes of K-12 students. To address this, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) commissioned Abt Global and our partners to conduct a systematic review of evidence-based student behavior interventions and develop accessible resources for school administrators, teachers, and staff.
The Approach
Leading the What Works Clearinghouse Preschool-to-Postsecondary Evidence Synthesis Task Orders Abt rigorously reviews research on educational programs and practices, applying What Works Clearinghouse standards to identify effective, evidence-based strategies to support students in demonstrating expected behavior. Collaborating with expert panels of researchers and practitioners, Abt distilled this evidence into practice guides with actionable reccomendations that empower teachers to implement evidence-based strategies into their classrooms.
The Results
Practice guides and reports developed throughout this project bridge the gap between evidence-based insights and classroom application, empowering teachers with practical tools to foster positive behavioral outcomes for their students.
The first of two student behavior practice guides is now available on the What Works Clearinghouse website, providing educators with actionable strategies grounded in rigorous evidence. In addition, Abt is developing a series of reports that synthesize the highest quality research on specific behavioral interventions identified during this project, further supporting educators and stakeholders with robust, research-driven resources.
