Only health systems that incorporate communities can sustainably contribute to universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. Such systems require trained health workers, of course — but also community organizations and committed volunteers, government and non-state institutional support, and sustainable financing. All of these need to be connected to avoid the “displacement of capacity” by future projects.

Dr. Eric Sarriot (Moderator), Senior Health Systems Strengthening Advisor, Save the Children; Community Health and Accountability Advisor, USAID Local Health System Sustainability Project; and co-chair CORE Systems for Health Working Group
Dr. Sarriot holds an M.D. from Paris VI and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He has over 25 years of experience in community health and health systems research, evaluation, and practice in vulnerable international settings, through non-profit, government, and private sector work.
Kate Greene, MBA, Human Resources for Health Advisor, Abt Global
Kate Greene is a recognized expert on human resources for health and health systems strengthening with more than 15 years of experience in planning and implementing complex programs in infectious and non-communicable diseases. In her current role at Abt Global, she helped launch the integration of screening and treatment for hypertension and diabetes into community health platforms in Brazil, India, South Africa, and the U.S. through the Medtronic Foundation-funded HealthRise Program. Ms. Greene also chairs the Steering Committee for the Frontline Health Workers Association.
Dr. David Bishai, Professor, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health
Dr. Bishai is a renowned researcher in the economics of public health practice with over 30 years of experience. His projects focus on the connection between the operations at national, state, and local health departments and improved population health. He led the AlmaAta40 initiative and recently co-authored a chapter on Community Platforms for Public Health Interventions in the 3rd edition of Disease Control Priorities: Improving Health and Reducing Poverty.
Dr. Telesphore Kabore, Community Health Senior Advisor, Breakthrough ACTION Project, Save the Children
Dr. Kabore is a community-based programming expert with a focus on maternal, newborn, and child health; HIV/AIDS prevention; nutrition; and education. He has over 25 years of experience providing leadership in community engagement, community health worker training, quality improvement, and program management, with the goal of assisting Ministries of Health and NGOs to establish community-based preventive and curative health services in more than 20 low-income countries.
