Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention of Biological Diversity (COP16)

Monday, October 21, 2024 – Friday, November 1, 2024
Cali, Colombia

The landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) adopted at COP15 set forth an ambitious vision for halting and reversing nature loss by 2030. The world now looks to the Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16) as a critical juncture to translate those commitments into tangible actions. At COP16, key discussions will focus on securing adequate biodiversity financing, especially ensuring that indigenous peoples, who are stewards of the planet’s most biodiverse regions, have equitable access to this funding. Integrating biodiversity across sectoral priorities like food, health, energy and finance will also be critical for bringing the GBF to life, including aligning financial flows to biodiversity goals – key to closing the $700 billion annual biodiversity financing gap.

While the GBF acknowledges the role of private sector engagement in achieving its goals, numerous challenges persist. Uncertainties surrounding biodiversity measurement, risk, impact and dependencies, along with the complexity of demonstrating return on investment, create hurdles for meaningful private sector participation.

Abt Global brings a wealth of cross-sectoral expertise in addressing these challenges. Through our nature and biodiversity initiatives, we partner with multilateral donors, national and local governments, and indigenous groups to co-develop conservation and climate adaptation solutions and increase access to critical financing. We recognize the health co-benefits of biodiversity, and the intrinsic link between ecosystem health and human well-being. We are committed to advancing these conversations at COP16 and beyond, ensuring that biodiversity solutions also foster climate resilience.
